Sweden goes the parliamentary road

Its no surprise that the latest country to complete ratification of lisbon did it the safe way. Sweden was always going to dodge a referendum if it could. Despite the backing of all the big players in swedish society the euro referendum was defeated. It is also interesting to note that the accession referendum was a close fought battle which was narrowly won only with a series of threats about national security which turned out to be of no substance. The EU has no desire whatsoever to connect with the ordinary joe soap, just to smugly decide what is best for him even if he doesnt know it himself.

Good Job we said no to Lisbon

Nearly every week there is another reason to be relieved we said no to the European Constitution pardon me Lisbon Treaty. Only today our foremost eurofederalist Gay Mitchell MEP (he's the man who claims diplomatic immunity when challenged on his claims on CIA funding of no lobby group Libertas) called for us to cede our soverignty over our territiorial waters to the EU to help prevent drugs landing in Ireland (Well Gay for a start if we are serious about keeping drugs out how about closing the blue channel in our ports, how many kilo's of heroin and cocaine enter via customs free channels) .
I for one dont want a foreign security agency policing our borders. Especially as EU security agencies enjoy diplomatic immunity. We are well up to it ourselves as we showed with the seizure off cork. Any help is certainly welcome in terms of intelligence & co-ordination. The Lisbon Treaty would have given Frontex a legal basis to act as a federal coastgaurd and bordergaurd and replace the Navy and Customs service.
